We are honored to have Grab & Grow Gardens featured in the Pandemic Pivot episode of A Growing Passion on KPBS!

Grab & Grow Gardens® Program

In a collaborative response to the COVID-19 crisis, Healthy Day Partners and Nan Sterman, Waterwise Gardener joined forces to create Grab & Grow Gardens. We started this program based on our shared mission of helping people grow fresh fruits and vegetables for themselves and their families - especially people who live where grocery stores and fresh produce are not readily available. We knew that by combining our resources, we could help people grow food, hope, and community resilience.

Grab & Grow Gardens are simple - a small selection of vegetable and/or herb seedlings in an easy to carry bag, along with instructions in English and Spanish.

Grab & Grow Gardens are distributed through hunger relief programs throughout San Diego. As people pick up meals and produce for the week, they are offered a garden to take home as well. Since our initial pilot program on April 2020, we have supplied over 44,000 Grab & Grow Gardens through over a dozen area agencies. The response has been overwhelming! As word spread, more agencies and organizations are reaching out and asking to offer Grab & Grow Gardens® to their clients as well.

In a time of great need, and great uncertainty for so many, Grab & Grow Gardens® offer long term access to healthy food, as well as opportunities to share the joy of gardening with families, children, seniors, and military personnel.

Together, we can can grow a healthier future for us all!
